NEWLY- built market stalls, aimed at supporting local economic development and creating a more organised and dignified trading environment for informal traders, were handed over to Ulundi vendors on Tuesday.

The stalls are situated in the town’s CBD, next to the long-distance taxi rank and were officially handed over to beneficiaries by Ulundi Mayor Wilson Ntshangase.

He said the relocation of traders to the new facilities gives them a dedicated and improved trading environment while contributing to the municipality’s efforts to improve the appearance, functionality and management of the Ulundi CBD.

There was much excitement and celebration among the beneficiaries at the handover; for many, the new trading stalls represent an opportunity to grow their businesses.

“We recognise the important contribution made by informal traders to the local economy. Small businesses and informal traders play a vital role in providing goods and services to communities while creating income-generating opportunities for local families,” said Ntshangase.

“We remain committed to creating an enabling environment where local entrepreneurs can operate their businesses safely, sustainably and with dignity.

“We will continue working with traders and other relevant stakeholders to ensure the new facilities are utilised effectively and contribute positively to the economic development and revitalisation of the Ulundi CBD,” said the mayor.
