The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) in Richards Bay duty crew were on Sunday afternoon activated following eyewitness reports of a capsized vessel in the harbour channel near the Meerensee Ski-boat Club.

NSRI Richards Bay deputy station commander Manie le Roux said it appeared that four local boaters, who were in no imminent danger, had for some time been attempting to right their boat – which may have capsized unmanned during Saturday night’s strong winds.

“NSRI shore crew responded to Meerensee Ski-boat Club to investigate while NSRI crew responded to our Station 19 base where rescue craft Spirit of Round Table II was launched,” said Le Roux.

He added that a local boater, using a second vessel, had towed the capsized 16-foot catamaran to the jetty at Meerensee Ski-boat Club where in shallow water the NSRI crew assisted them to right the capsized boat, which was then recovered onto her trailer without incident.

“Once their casualty boat was safely recovered, no further assistance was required,” said Le Roux.
