Police warn of fake job offers demanding R15 000

KZN police warn jobseekers about fake SAPS recruitment scams demanding deposits, while Ulundi Municipality flags fraudulent payment messages targeting residents

In a new scam doing the rounds, a fraudster purports to offer jobs within the South African Police Service (SAPS) in exchange for R15 000.

KZN police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Paul Magwaza said they were alerted to WhatsApp messages sent to unsuspecting jobseekers.

“The WhatsApp profile picture used in these bogus job offers is that of the KZN deputy provincial commissioner for corporate services, Major General SB Ngcobo,” said Magwaza.

“The scammers immediately forward an application form to the prospective victim and demand R15 000 for the purported employment opportunity. Victims are, however, instructed to pay a deposit of R7 500 with the balance payable upon signing employment papers.”

Magwaza said nobody is ever asked to pay for employment with the police.

Meanwhile, Ulundi Municipality is warning against a fraudulent message circulating from cellphone number 072 4919893, demanding immediate payment to avoid legal action and disconnection.

According to the municipality, the message instructs recipients to pay and submit proof of payment.

People are warned:

• Not to respond to suspicious messages
• Not to make payments to unverified accounts
• Not to share personal and financial information with unknown individuals
• To verify the authenticity of any payment request through official communication channel
• To independently verify banking details with the municipality
• To report any suspicious message to the relevant authorities
• To immediately contact their bank if financial loss is suspected
The municipality can be contacted on 087 2870302.
