Matric farewells are costing parents a fortune

THERE are rumours that the Grade 12s of one of our local high schools are going to pay R325 each for their matric farewell.

My concern is the following:

• Why are children paying for their matric farewell? Why did they not raise funds while in Grade 11 so that the money could be used to pay for the event?

• Why not let the matrics start paying for the matric farewell each month of their Grade 11 year? That way they will not feel that it is costing them too much.

• Why is the school going to so much trouble with the food if most of the children don’t eat fancy food? The matrics of last year didn’t even touch their starter that was a pastry-something! The food had to be thrown away.

• This year there are more girls than boys, but the school said that the girls are not allowed to bring their own dates. Why not?

• Why are the teachers going to the matric farewell? Are they also going to pay R325 per person? I don’t think so.

The rules are just getting more ridiculous each year. Why not stop the matric farewell? And if it still goes ahead, ask parents to organise after parties for the children.

The parents have already spent so many money on the dresses, hair, photos, makeup, shoes, suits for the boys, but then again …. why are parents spending R5 000 on a dress that is never going to be worn again after the matric farewell?

The children are anyway more concerned about the after-party than the matric farewell itself.

JUST WONDERING
