If, like me, you enjoy the fun aspects of Halloween but don’t like getting too freaked out (the world is a scary enough place, thanks) then you go put the popcorn on because here’s the perfect list of Halloween movies for you.
1. Hocus Pocus 1 (1993) AND Hocus Pocus 2 (2022) PG
Starring: Bette Midler | Sarah Jessica Parker | Mary Sanderson
A disgruntled teenage boy named Max and his little sister move to the small town of Salem in the USA, where he struggles to fit in.
Halloween rolls around and he and his love interest manage to awaken a trio of diabolical witches, the Sanderson Sisters, who were executed in the 17th century.
The sequel sees two young women accidentally bring back the Sanderson Sisters to modern-day Salem. They now have to find a way to stop the child-hungry witches from wreaking havoc.
2. Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) PG
Starring: Danny Elfman | Chris Sarandon | Catherine O’Hara
This is a classic stop-motion animated musical fantasy film where the lead, Jack Skellington, King of Halloween Town, discovers Christmas Town and plots to take over the holiday.
3. The Addams Family (1991) AND The Addams Family Values (1993) PG-13
Starring: Anjelica Huston | Raul Julia | Christopher Lloyd | Christina Ricci
This supernatural black comedy features the renowned Addams family who love everything dark and deathly.
The original film sees con artists trying to fleece this eccentric family by suing an accomplice who claims to be their long-lost uncle.
The sequel introduces baby Pubert, and as the family adjusts to the new addition, they must contend with a serial killer nanny whose out for his inheritance.
Well worth watching is the latest Tim Burton contribution to the genre – the Netflix series, Wednesday.
4. Casper (1995) PG
Starring: Bill Pullman | Christina Ricci | Cathy Moriarty
An afterlife therapist – as in a psychologist for ghosts – and his daughter move into a creepy and crumbling mansion which they intend to rid of its 3 wicked spirits.
It’s here that the daughter meets and falls for a friendly ghost, Casper.
5. Beetlejuice (1988) AND Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024) PG
Starring: Michael Keaton | Catherine O’Hara | Winona Ryder
An absolute cult classic, the film focuses on the spirits of a deceased couple who are harassed by an unbearable family that has moved into their home at Winter River.
Desperate for a solution, they hire a malicious spirit – Beetlejuice (say his name three times and he appears) – to drive them out. Fast-forward a few decades and the sequel has arrived (it might still be on the big screen), after a tragedy, the Deetz family returns to Winter River.
Lydia, now a mom to teenage daughter Astrid, needs Beetlejuice’s help to save her daughter from the afterlife.
6. The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) R
Starring: Tim Curry | Susan Sarandon | Barry Bostwick
This is a beat-bopping cult classic that’s well worth a watch.
The story follows a newly engaged couple who breakdown in an isolated area and has to seek shelter at the bizarre residence of Dr. Frank-n-Furter.
7. Ghostbusters (1984) PG AND Ghostbusters II (1989) PG
Starring: Bill Murray | Dan Aykroyd | Sigourney Weaver
Three parapsychologists (another interesting profession) are forced out of their university funding and set up shop as a unique ghost removal service in New York City, attracting frightened yet sceptical customers.
This continues in the sequel where a massive river of ectoplasm has led to the resurgence of spectral activity in New York.
There are also new takes on this classic movie with the all-female-lead cast in Ghostbusters (2016) remake and the 2021 Ghostbusters Afterlife with a connection to the original film.
