BLOGGING THE VIEW: 3 ways to show real support this Women’s Day

Not sure how to commemorate Women's Day this year? Here are 3 simple ideas...

EACH year, as August rolls around, we realise the extent of gender inequality and contend with the extremely distressing news of GBV daily. However, strides are being made. According to the Global Gender Gap Report 2024 published in June, the world has closed the gender gap by 68.5%. This is something, but it’s not enough.

If we continue at this rate, it’s going to take around 134 years – or five generations – to achieve gender parity. That means today’s children will not know gender equality and will STILL be fighting this fight… as well as their children, and so it goes.

The problem is a lack of gender equality directly relates to gender-based violence. To eradicate this evil, we need the worth of women to be acknowledged and celebrated.

How do we do this?

1. Support women-owned businesses
Be a conscious shopper and support women-owned businesses wherever you can. From local trade stalls to professional services, you can make a difference by supporting women. These women are often caring for young children – whether their own or family members’ – and possibly even parents and grandparents. Showing your support can go a long way. Consider sharing their details on social media platforms to give them more support.

2. Raise your voice
Use every opportunity you can to be vocal about gender equality, and call for more representation of women at all levels and in all spheres. Change starts at home so ensure your children are being treated fairly at school, and that they too are aware of the need for gender parity. Break stereotypes, and advocate for policies and practices in schools and workplaces that treat women fairly. Policies around maternity and paternity leave, breastfeeding breaks and flexible hours for parents need to align with real-world needs.

3. Support women in sport
For the first time in history, the Olympic Games has an equal number of female and male competitors. This is a big step, and just one example of women’s sport finally getting the recognition it deserves, both in sponsorship and airtime. Let’s keep this positive momentum going by supporting women in sport, whether watching them on TV or live at a stadium, or sharing your support on social media. Make your voices heard.

Let’s use this Women’s Month to be heard, and try to bring that gender gap down to zero in our children’s lifetime.
