BLOGGING THE VIEW: 5 ‘pawsome’ reasons to adopt a dog

From their wagging tails to their slobbering mouths, there's so much to love about dogs. Here are 5 reasons life is better with a pup in it

On Tuesday, 26 August we get the chance to celebrate man’s (and woman’s) best friend. International Dog Day is a chance to honour our four-legged companions, celebrate their life-changing commitment, and encourage interested people to adopt a dog and save a life. Here are 5 good reasons:

1. Dogs give unconditional love

Few bonds are as pure as the one between a human and a dog. From the enthusiastic tail wags that greet you at the door, to the quiet comfort of your pup resting at your feet, dogs have a way of making you feel truly seen and loved. Dogs don’t judge, they don’t hold grudges, and they always seem to know when you need a little extra comfort. Whether it’s a gentle nudge when you’re feeling low or an invitation to play when you need a lift, dogs are natural companions that bring joy and connection every day.

2. Dogs are good for your health

Science backs up what dog owners already know: dogs make us healthier and happier. Studies show that spending time with dogs can lower blood pressure, reduce stress hormones like cortisol, and improve overall heart health. Just petting a dog for 10 minutes has been shown to lower anxiety and promote calm. Dogs also keep us active. Daily walks, runs in the park, and games of fetch encourage physical activity and healthier routines. A British study even found that dog owners are four times more likely than non-dog owners to meet daily exercise goals.

3. Dogs are great companions

In today’s fast-paced and often isolating world, feelings of loneliness are common. But with a dog by your side, you’re never truly alone. Dogs offer emotional support and companionship that helps stave off social isolation. In fact, a survey by the Human Animal Bond Research Institute found that 85% of people believe interacting with pets helps reduce loneliness.

4. Dogs deserve a second chance

One of the most powerful reasons to adopt is that you’re giving a dog a second chance at life. Shelters across South Africa are filled with dogs – from tiny puppies to older rescues – all waiting for a loving home. When you adopt, you’re not only saving that dog but also making space in the shelter for another animal in need.

5. Dogs make life better

Life is simply better with a dog. Their playful spirit, goofy personalities, and boundless energy bring daily laughter and joy. Even on the toughest days, a dog’s wagging tail or happy face can remind us of the simple pleasures in life. From encouraging social interactions at the dog park to giving you a reason to explore new walking trails, dogs have a way of making everyday life more vibrant and fulfilling.

This International Dog Day, give your best friend an extra cuddle and a treat. And if you don’t have a pup – maybe this is your sign to adopt one?
