World Suicide Prevention Day: 10 September

LifeLine Zululand Mental Health Road Show: Focusing on Prevention of Suicidality and Suicide Ideation

Summary

World Suicide Prevention Day is commemorated on 10 September annually. The initiative, championed by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and a few other organisations, seeks to highlight the need to change the narrative around mental health with the focus on prevention of suicidality and suicide ideation. The initiative is a reminder to us all that support is available, and all you need to do is reach out for help.

Campaign Information

The Covid-19 pandemic seemingly contributed to the rise in a number of existing social ills faced by many individuals and communities namely, depression, gender based violence, alcohol and substance abuse, families and relationships issues, financial and economic stress and amongst them is suicidality and death by suicide. The latter still being taboo where little to no dialogues to engage communities on prevention to address suicide ideation as a social ill.

This year once again LifeLine Zululand echoes the theme of HOPE and is moving forward through ACTION. The Organisation is hosting its mental health campaigns throughout northern KwaZulu-Natal, creating safe space dialogue platforms for sharing information on prevention of suicidality and prevention on suicide ideation in communities. This in an effort to encourage community members to come forward and dialogue with us and take responsibility for their mental and emotional health, moving towards an emotionally healthier, improved and thriving community.

We are emotional beings and should strive to be emotionally well and mentally fit, which aids us to cope better with life’s challenges and if we have the correct support.
