THE Zululand Schools team are certainly making their presence felt in this year’s Webber Cup and with two wins in as many matches are heading the log with a full house of points.
In Saturday’s match against Empangeni they were dismissed for 147 on a good pitch that should have produced a better score.
Jason Redinger was the top scorer with 38.
But with Karl Marais only scoring two and last week’s top scorer Trevor Kietzmann leaving the crease without scoring, it was left to Taylor Gelink (15), Michael Soloman (12) and Du Toit Pretorius (11) to assist Redinger in his efforts to give the innings some substance.
Empangeni bowlers Robert Snyman 5/58 and Martin Heunis 3/14 were the main sources of annoyance for the School’s batsmen.
Empangeni’s reply got off to a reasonable start, but once Eugene Zwart departed for a top score of 39, it was left to Graham Karg who managed 29, Johan Kruger (17) and Dewald Pretorius (14) to try and pull the innings around.
They were dismissed for 129, 18 runs short of their target.
Sizwa Mthembu 3/46, Trevor Kietzmann 2/21 and Karl Marais 5/38 in 8.5 overs bowled their team to a handsome victory.
The match between the University team and the Richards Bay Rugby Club had to be postponed. Once again it was the municipality that was responsible for the postponement, failing to prepare the pitch for the occasion. A suitable date will now have to be found to replay the match.
eShowe win
The final match between Village and eShowe resulted in a victory for the latter with five wickets to spare.
Village, batting first, were dismissed for a dismal 72, with Alwyn Carstens top scoring with 26.
eShowe were a bit shaky in their reply, losing five wickets in reaching the target of 73 runs.
Kindly note that the Schools match against Village that should have been played at Grantleigh School on Sunday 15 September, will now be played at Addison Park this Sunday.
The KZN Schools trials involving our Zululand Schools XI will be played on Sunday, 15 September.
