Thanda half way there

Thanda poised for promotion.

THERE will certainly be no over-indulging during the festive season for the Thanda Royal Zulu squad.

Having climbed steadily up the ladder after an average start to the 2014/15 season in August, the Amabhubesi will want to be fit and ready when the National First Division resumes in February.

Thanda were among the league’s bottom feeders after four draws, a loss and just one win in their first six matches, giving them just seven points.

But this disappointing display was erased with six wins, three draws and a solitary defeat in the next 10 games – plus a solid win in the qualification round for the Nedbank Cup.

Not only are they handily placed in fourth spot with 28 points, only four behind log leaders Jomo Cosmos, but they have banged home 20 goals in the last 10 matches, a vast improvement from just five in their first six.

Add to that the fact that they share, with Cosmos, the meanest defensive record in the NFD, conceding only 11 goals in 16 games.

They never let in more than two goals in any match and had seven clean sheets.

On top of all this, Phumelele Ace Bhengu heads the NFD sharpshooter list with 12 goals so far and a pleasing aspect is that a number of other Thanda players have also found the net with regularity.

Fans have certainly noticed a vast improvement in the tactical and playing style over recent matches, implying that coach-in-waiting Vladislav Heric and his more than capable stand-in Asanda Mvalo have got the boys understanding their roles better.

Every side in the league fears coming against the Amabhubesi the way they are now performing.

They have beaten all three sides that sit above them on the log and with PSL promotion beckoning are hungry for the opportunity to display their talents in the big league.

Taking it one game at a time and putting away many more chances than they have done in every past match is the formula needed for success.

Thanda’s faithful supporters can’t wait for the title chase to resume on 11 February at home against Baroka FC, who held them to a 0-0 draw in the first round.
