Spring conditions limit angling on Zululand coast

Promising weekend forecast to make for good night fishing targeting cob, stumpies, reef species

With the onset of spring, the Zululand coast has been experiencing strong south-westerly winds, resulting in rough seas and heavy ground swells — conditions far from ideal for rock and surf angling.

As a result, reports from the angling front have been few and far between.

Barry Tedder, fishing at Kosi Bay, managed to find a small break in the weather and successfully landed a 15kg bronze hammerhead shark.

Meanwhile, those anglers determined to get a line in the water have resorted to fishing in Richards Bay, where a few small spotted grunter have been caught.

Looking ahead, the upcoming weekend’s forecast appears promising.

The sea should be fairly calm and clean, making night fishing a good option for targeting cob, stumpies, and reef species in rocky areas.

During daylight hours, some late-season snoek may also be on the bite.

Recommended spots include Nhlobane for snoek and cob, 5 Mile for cob, and Njokenjane for cob and reef species.

Cape Vidal, St Lucia and Maphelane remain excellent choices for edible fish, especially when fishing overnight.

Shad season is now closed until the end of November, and any shad caught must be released.
