Richards Bay FC denied in the storm
Betway Premiership encounter between Richards Bay FC and Durban City, ends in goal-less draw
Durban City must have sung the praises of their goalkeeper Darren Keet all the way down the N2 after sneaking away with a point against Richards Bay FC on Sunday evening.
The veteran stopper pulled off a number of impressive saves when the home side piled on the pressure in the second half as the Betway Premiership encounter failed to produce any goals.
The game had started on the worst possible note for the Rich Boyz when stand-in skipper Tshepo Mabua, deputising for the injured Simphiwe Mcineka, went down clutching his knee after hard tackle contact.
He was subbed by Thabani Zuke, who went on to have a terrific game at the heart of the defence.
The first half saw the sides cancel each other out, with no shots of note recorded, although an unmarked Knox Mutizwa failed to control when put through on goal; but the second stanza was a different matter.
The arrival of a severe thunderstorm, accompanied by rain and lightning flashes, ignited the NRB side as they took the attack to their opponents.
Lindokuhle Zikhali fired over the top from close range, sub Gabadinho Mhango lacked power on the stretch, and Mutizwa and Lundi Mahala were closed down in the act of shooting.
In between were the heroics of Keet and a handball appeal not given by the official as Richards Bay did everything but score.
Well done to the fans who stuck it out to the end in the driving rain, once again hoping the promised stadium roofing will fit into Santa’s stocking during the mid-season break.
