SA Shore Angling hosts Namibia in Jeffreys Bay

Angler’s angles from 'The Bay’

The South African Shore Angling Association is currently hosting Team Namibia in a highly anticipated international shore angling tournament taking place in Jeffreys Bay.

As the opening day (Tuesday) unfolded, competitors battled through extremely tough conditions, with large swells, strong south-westerly winds and heavy weed making fishing exceptionally challenging.

Despite the adverse weather, anglers remain determined.

In competitive shore angling, they must adapt to both favourable and difficult conditions, pushing to make the most of every opportunity.

The event features six divisions: Seniors, Ladies, U21, U16, Masters (over 50) and Grandmasters (over 60).

These categories are split into two groups for the tournament:

• Group 1: Seniors, U21, Masters
• Group 2: Ladies, U16, Grandmasters

Each group follows its own rotation of fishing venues across Jeffreys Bay:

• Group 1: Kabeljoes Surf (Day 1), Sundays Surf (Day 2), Gamtoos Surf (Day 3)
• Group 2: Paradise Beach (Day 1), Kabeljoes Surf (Day 2), Sunday’s Surf (Day 3)

Local conditions remain tough

Back home, Zululand anglers have also faced rough seas over the past two weeks, resulting in limited activity and few noteworthy catches.

The Zululand League was forced to postpone its planned Common Venue competition due to the poor conditions and has rescheduled the event for the upcoming weekend.

Local anglers are hoping for an improvement in the weather to salvage a productive session.

Still, a few dedicated anglers managed to make the most of brief windows of opportunity.

Among them was Chris Visagie, who landed a respectable blue ray and a young guitarfish.
