King Cetshwayo chess players compete in inter-provincial championship

King Cetshwayo chess players who participated in the Mzansi Inter-Provincial Youth Chess Championship

Chess players from local schools competed at the Mzansi Inter-Provincial Youth Chess Championship in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape, from 15 to 20 December 2025.

The KZN team comprised 88 players, of whom 21 were from the King Cetshwayo District, representing under 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 20, and adult teams.

Chess players were selected through trials from all over the districts provincially.

“Well done everyone, you made us and your schools proud,” said Lisa Griffiths, KCCA (King Cetshwayo Chess Association) chairperson.

Overall, the KZN Team placed 4th out of nine provinces.

The Mzansi Inter-Provincial is an annual event in December, with KZN trials to take place for the selection.

“My advice and encouragement to all chess communities is to start involving your school and affiliate with the district chess structure and to support your learners to participate in all the tournaments taking place within the district,” said Griffiths.

The first tournament will be held on 7 February 2026.
