AUGUST is known for many things and in South Africa, it is the month when we celebrate women, and acknowledge their struggles and achievements.

It’s the last month of the winter season, but there is much more to it.

August used to be the sixth month on the calendar and was called ‘Sextillia’ – a Latin word for ‘sixth’, but in 8 BC it was named August after Emperor Augustus Caesar.

* August is a popular baby name in Sweden
* Both Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago celebrate Independence Day in August
* August is named after Augustus Caesar, founder and the first emperor of the Roman Empire, who was later adopted by his maternal great uncle, Gaius Julius Caesar
* Peridot, sardonyx, and spinel are the birthstones associated with the month
* Only one of Shakespeare’s plays mentions the month August
* On 21 August 1911, the Mona Lisa was stolen from the Louvre Gallery and not recovered for two years
* Some famous people born in August include Martha Stewart, Martin Sheen, Jeff Gordon, Deion Sanders and Halle Berry
