World Tuberculosis Day

Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the top 10 causes of death worldwide.

The good news is that TB is a treatable and curable disease.

There are also a couple things you can do to protect yourself from getting TB:

  1. Open the windows, especially if you’re using public transport. Good ventilation can help curb the spread of this airborne disease.
  2. Be healthy. People with weak immune systems, such as people living with HIV, malnutrition, diabetes or smokers, have a much higher risk of getting TB. A healthy immune system is the best form of defence against TB.
  3. Get enough sunshine. Your body produces Vitamin Dwhen your bare skin is exposed to sunlight, and, according to some studies, there is evidence that Vitamin D could lower one’s risk of getting TB.
  4. Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze. TB is not the only disease that spreads through airborne droplets. Protect your loved ones by sneezing into a tissue orinto your upper sleeve when you have the sniffles.

You can get free TB testing at your nearest clinic. Treatment is also free.
