Duduza – Stars Early Childhood Development (ECD), located in John Dube, celebrated 67 Minutes of Mandela Day outside the establishment’s yard on July 17.

The ECD served breakfast and lunch to over 50 community members within the area.

Ntombifuthi Mazibuko says the ECD was established for the community, and the best way to show appreciation to the community that supports them is by giving back.

“We also decided to give out dignity towels to young girls within the community, as many face period poverty and cannot afford to buy pads.

“Many do not have the privilege of eating breakfast before school or when elders go for check-up appointments,” she explained.

“Elders are on medication and always need to eat before consuming any medication, which is why we decided to give out food in commemoration of Mandela Day.”

She said she is grateful for the ongoing support received from the community.

“I carry this community within my heart and love being a member. We are not only established as a business, but also to give back when we can,” she said.

The ECD commemorates Mandela Day annually. Last year, they gave learners at Dan Radebe Primary School toothbrushes and toothpaste to the boys and sanitary towels to the girls.

A resident and parent, Phumelele Ndzimbovu, expressed gratitude for the initiative.

She noted that many people are struggling and seeing an ECD give back restores faith within the community.

“There are still people who are willing to give; that warms my heart.”
