Career pathing for unemployed youth

Young unemployed people from KwaThema were given information and learned about career pathing.

The event was organised and hosted by Make It Count Youth Development (MICYD) last Friday at the KwaThema Community Centre.

Nthabiseng Nkoane works in the help desk at the KwaThema Customer Care Centre, Michael Mthombeni is in the trade skills industry, while Nthabiseng Mokoena recently became a chef after going through hospitality training.

The trio gave advice and explained their industries to the eager audience. Michael works as a panel beater, he advised young people to use their hands saying “not everyone will work an office job.”

He also encouraged females to enter into skills like welding since “employers in the artisan industry are looking to employ women,” said Michael.

He also urged the youth to accept lower position jobs as that could be an opportunity to build their way up.

According to the marketing and communications officer at MICYD, Thabang Xaba, they decided to swap their usual career exhibition for career pathing which they hope will be more effective.

“The idea is to get young people information on specific skills which are in demand and bring professionals from those fields,” said Thabang.

Career pathing also assists people to look at career goals, needed knowledge, required experience and personal characteristics.

Mthunzi Dladla (29) from White City KwaThema says he has welding experience “I came here to get information on how I can get a welding certificate.”
