Developing young artists
Members of Star in Vire Art practitioners are currently producing work which will be exhibited end of March.
The project was founded in December by Abel Khumalo, who is a resident of KwaThema Extension Two.
Twelve children from primary and high schools take art lessons at no cost, most of them are from Extension Three, KwaThema.
“I started this project because I was tired of seeing children being knocked down by cars while playing in the main road which separates Ext 2 and 3, and because art is scarce for us,” says Abel.
The children’s lessons take place on Sunday and are provided by local artist Vusi Mbulali.
Vusi says he was taught art by some of the art legends from the community including Masa Ngwenya, Ace Mdupi and Ace Madiphana.
“I’m so happy to have an opportunity to share the skills which were given to me as a young man.”
The group is still doing basic art where they are taught about lines, shapes, texture, tone and art perspective.
“At the beginning of March we will start with painting the sketches that are being created now.”
Vusi says his goal is to help these youngsters to be identified as artists.
