Walking through the streets of Extension Three Marikana is like walking on a wet floor.
People’s fences are used for balance and to prevent slipping, which has become all too common since the rain started.
Wellington boots are also a necessity as some parts of the area have muddy waters deep enough to cover a person’s foot.
Getting home doesn’t mean problem solved, as some residents have to constantly scoop water from inside their homes.
Goodness Gininda is one such resident, she says the water behind her shack gets inside and appears from under the tiles and cupboards.
“My body is sore from lifting loads of 20 litre buckets and I’m afraid this dirty water is going to make me sick,” says Goodness.
She says she contacted her councillor Johannes Busakwe to alert him about her situation.
Goodness says, “He just told me to contact disaster management and hung up the phone.”
When the councillor was called by the paper, someone identifying himself as the councillor’s son answered the phone and said the councillor was attending to personal matters, and will only be available next week.
Attempts to reach the Ekurhuleni Emergency Services for comment were unsuccessful.
