New bridge to link two sections

The new bridge between KwaThema's Rest in Peace and Barcelona sections is under construction

The work started three weeks ago and has created 13 job opportunities for the people of that area.

One of the employees working on the construction, Siphelele Shabalala, said the project will help him feed his family.

He said for a few months he will not have to worry about what his family will have to eat before going to bed. “I know the pain of being unemployed and am thankful for a period that I will be a provider in my family,” said an excited Shabalala.

Ward 77 councillor Wilson Busakwe, confirmed that the bridge is built to help schoolchildren cross from Barcelona to schools in Rest in Peace section.

He said because of the danger posed by the stagnant water where young learners cross, the metro has seen the need to build a bridge to avoid dangers or possible drowning of children when crossing.

Barcelona resident, Amos Masondo, explained the dangers that their children are faced with when crossing the stream to school.

“When it rains, parents have to take their children to school to protect them from drowning,” said Masondo.

He added that sometimes when it rains for more than a day children have to be absent from school as they will not be able to cross to Rest in Peace section where they attend school.

One of the constructors on the site, Philip Mathabela said if all goes as planned, the construction is expected to be complete towards the end of this month.
