From Kwa-Thema to impact: Thabo Mcunu blends luxury tourism with community development

Thabo Mcunu is reshaping the tourism industry by linking luxury travel with local economic empowerment and opportunity.

Kwa-Thema – Thabo Mcunu is a young entrepreneur who links luxury travel with community development.

In an industry often associated with exclusivity, Mcunu, an entrepreneur from Kwa-Thema, is challenging conventional ideas about who benefits from tourism and how.

Mcunu founded TJ Bonds Tourism and had developed a model that combines high-end travel experiences with a focus on community participation and economic inclusion.

His approach seeks to connect established tourism spaces with local talent, small businesses, and emerging creatives.

“I did not just want to build a tourism company. I wanted to build a platform that opens doors more especially for people who come from where I come from,” he explained.

His travel agency operates through a multi-layered structure that brings together luxury accommodation, digital content creation, events, and local service providers.

“The aim is to create shared value by ensuring that opportunities linked to tourism extend beyond traditional stakeholders.

“Through curated events, creative productions, and corporate functions, the platform activates spaces in ways that generate income for both property owners and local entrepreneurs,” he cited.

Mcunu emphasised that content creators are also given opportunities to showcase their work, contributing to broader digital visibility for both destinations and communities.

One of the company’s initiatives, ‘Hangout with TJ,’ has grown into a networking platform that brings together entrepreneurs, creatives, and professionals from different sectors.

These gatherings focus on collaboration and knowledge sharing while also providing exposure for emerging talent.

“Participants are able to connect with potential partners, access new markets, and exchange ideas in an environment designed to encourage growth.

“Beyond events and tourism, the company has introduced programmes aimed at supporting entrepreneurship.

“These include workshops on business development, financial literacy sessions, and mentorship opportunities for small enterprises and creatives,” Mcunu stated.

He added that his intention is to address common barriers such as limited access to information, resources, and professional networks.

“My agency operations incorporate local suppliers and service providers into its activities. This includes employment opportunities in areas such as event support, maintenance, and catering, as well as collaboration with artists and independent businesses.

“By sourcing services locally, the company contributes to keeping economic activity within the communities it engages,” he mentioned.

While the platform promotes premium travel experiences, it also emphasises responsible tourism practices.

He highlighted that these include attention to sustainability, respect for cultural heritage, and efforts to ensure that tourism activities do not exclude surrounding communities.

Mcunu describes the initiative as part of a broader vision to create an ecosystem where tourism, entrepreneurship, and creativity intersect.

The long-term goal is to expand opportunities for participation in the tourism economy, particularly for individuals from historically underrepresented areas.

“We are building more than a brand. We are building a future where opportunity is accessible, and success is shared,” he concluded.
