Pedestrian killed

Car kills man walking on the pavement

A 60-year-old man was knocked down and killed by a speeding vehicle while walking on the pavement in Majola Street KwaThema.

The man was taken to a government mortuary, as his next of kin had not been located.

According to the EMPD spokesman Vusi Mabanga there are allegations that the car which killed the pedestrian was chasing another vehicle.

The driver then attempted to flee the scene but was cornered by other quick motorists, before handing him over to the police.

The suspect was then transported to the Springs Police Station, were he was detained.

Mabanga said they applaud the actions of, concerned drivers who risked their lives to ensure the wrongdoer was brought to book.

The spokesman adds the area in Majola Street, between Thema and Vlakfontein Roads has a high volume of pedestrians.

He advised that motorists need to be extra careful when driving on that stretch of the road.

Mabanga identified recklessness and negligence by motorists and pedestrians as a contributing factor to high statistics of accidents around the area.
