Volunteers help save our children

Ensuring they get to school safe

Thabo Moshweu says the constant accidents in Vlakfontein Road which leads to Ntsindi Street, forced him to take action in order to save lives.

He, together with another resident Kentseng Matebese, have deployed themselves and now wake up early in the morning to assist schoolchildren to cross the road safely.

The pair received point duty training from the KwaThema Traffic Academy in 2007, and they use those skills to control traffic.

Thabo adds that when a young school child was knocked down in February, on the day that he had not volunteered his services, it became clear that he must always be there.

“I spent the whole day with that child in hospital, and the next day I reported for duty and have been doing it daily since,” he said.

Nosipho Mkhavele is one of the parents who walk their kids to school. She says the reason she walks her seven-year-old daughter to school is because she wants her to get to school safely.

She noted that children get knocked down by cars while on their way to school.

She said, “Vlakfontein Road kills everything, young, old, humans and animals all become victims here of road accidents.”

Speaking for the EMPD Vusi Mabanga confirmed there was a volunteer working at that point, but was stopped for his own safety and the legality thereof.

He said the KwaThema traffic precinct commander promised to deploy officers to control the point during peak periods.

“We plead with community members to be extra careful when crossing the road and follow the basic rules of the road,” said Mabanga.
