Learners trained in financial management

Learners got free financial training from Absa

Primary and secondary school learners were trained in financial management by staff from Absa Bank on Friday.

The children filled one of the classrooms at the Tsakane Primary School to get information on financial management.

According to Priscilla Parkins, from Absa, the free workshop is aimed at empowering citizens, irrespective of their age, about managing their money.

She said, as many people turn to loan sharks because they lack the skill to manage their money, Absa has seen the need for the communities to be educated.

Venessa Mokoena (14), who is in Grade Eight at Tsakane Secondary School, said the workshop helped her understand the importance of saving and using the money that she has wisely.

She said it made her realise the disadvantages faced by the people who turn to loan sharks for financial assistance.

“With the information that I have, I will also educate people to stay away from loan sharks and from borrowing huge amounts of money that they will struggle to pay back,” said Venessa.

She also advised that one should only withdraw money when there is a need and to draw up a monthly budget to avoid overspending. Venessa, who wants to study at university to become an accountant, said she will immediately start saving some of her lunch money so that she can buy herself a present at the end of the year.

“I learnt that saving has an excellent reward at the end,” said Venessa.
