Ekurhuleni Metro has spent only 87.65% of its capital budget from grants it received during the 2013/2014 financial year.
This came to light when an item on this was tabled at the August meeting of Ekurhuleni, held in Germiston,
The total amount not spent during the 2013/2014 financial year in the capital budget was R172 802 674.
This amount will now be rolled over and be spent in the 2014/2015 financial year that started in July 2014.
Some projects from the region that the money will be spent on in the 2014/2015 financial year are almost R500 000 providing water in Tsakane Extension 6 and 10 and another R500 000 to finish the construction of a fire station in Duduza.
The rolled over projects include an amount of R82,8-million that was not spent to purchase land for the Department of Human Settlements.
An amount of R44-million was also not spent in the Department of Transport.
Several political parties voiced their concerns on this situation at Ekurhuleni Metro Municipality’s August meeting last Thursday.
Lesego Senthso of Cope asked serious questions on why the money was not spent, especially for purchasing of land for the human settlements department.
Ramesh Sheodin of the DA also asked why the land was not acquired, saying it seemed as if there was no urgency in providing the poorest of poor with homes.
