Metro teaches seniors about disasters
This will be held during the International Day for Disaster Reduction.
Ekurhuleni Metro will educate its senior citizens how to be safe when disaster strikes during the International Day for Disaster Reduction (IDDR).
This event will be held at the Germiston City Hall on October 13.
IDDR, observed every year on this day, is an initiative of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR), which is responsible for supporting the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction.
The metro’s Department of Disaster and Emergency Management Services on this day will raise awareness on issues of disaster reduction and disaster management within communities.
This year’s theme “Resilience is for Life” places the spotlight on older members of society, including their needs and what they contribute to better understanding and planning of disaster risks in their communities.
The elderly will be educated on how to plan for a fire, plan an emergency escape route, actions to reduce risk of flooding and how to make an emergency phone call during a disaster.
The day takes place from 9am to 1pm in the Germiston City Hall.
