Michael Zulu to soon have new classrooms
Learning inside a shack will soon be yesterday's story to the Grade R learners at Michael Zulu Primary School.
Situated in the heart of Tsakane, Michael Zulu has been struggling with finding a better place to teach the Grade R learners.
Since the Grade R class was opened in the school in 2011, 144 children were forced to use a shack in the school grounds as their classroom.
However, teaching and learning is expected to soon change for the better after the school received a cheque for R100 000 from Krones Southern Africa on Monday.
Speaking on behalf of the school, principal Lindiwe Vilakazi said the donation will help to build new Grade R classrooms.
She confirmed that learning for the Grade R learners was a nightmare.
“During the winter season, learners are freezing inside the shack while in summer the heat is unbearable,” said Vilakazi.
She then thanked the Shaping the Learner company, the organisation that helped secure sponsorship, for assisting the school.
Vilakazi also promised the donors that the construction of the new classrooms will start soon.
School Governing Body (SGB) chairman, Pinkie Magasela said the construction of the new classrooms will make the learners love education.
“Being taught inside a shack discourages our learners,” said Magasela.
She confirmed that the learners are not only affected by the cold and the heat that they experience inside a shack, but are also victims of heavy rains.
“When it rains, the rain gets inside the shack which at times caused children to fall sick,” said Magasela.
Debbie Lugtenburg from Krones Southern Africa, said her company donated to the school as a way to promote education.
“We want to make the learners feel safe, loved and enjoy learning at all times,” Lugtenburg said.
