Cable theft problem persists

Duduza - While many people value the addition of street lights to their neighbourhood, some residents in Duduza are reportedly destroying them.

According to resident Thabo Seepe street lights that were installed in the area in January have been stripped of their cables, while others have been removed.

“Most of the street lights from John Dube to other parts of Roseview Section have been destroyed,” he says.

He believes those who steal the cables and remove the poles are selling the materials to scrap yards.

Seepe appealed to the community not to vandalise the infrastructure, but to ensure they protect it at all times.

Another resident, Gladys Shabalala, says the destruction of street lights in the area not only affects the Ekurhuleni Metro, but also impacts on the safety of woman who walk in the area at night.

She says the lights are needed by women to see whether someone is approaching or following them.

“The community needs to report those who vandalise government’s property, so they can be removed from the community,” she says.

Ward councillor Tiny Mabena was not available for comment.
