Claims of linen shortage at Pholosong Hospital

Tsakane - Patients at Pholosong Hospital have to rely on relatives to bring them clean sheets, blankets and pillows.

This has been alleged by Nombuso Khoza (42) whose cousin, Thulane Nxumalo (38), is currently being treated at the hospital.

Khoza claims the family has been responsible for ensuring Nxumalo has clean linen.

“What will happen when no one can go to the hospital and bring her clean sheets and pillows, it is worrying?” she says.

Department of Health spokesman Steve Mabona says no practice exists in any of the public hospitals in Gauteng, including Pholosong Hospital, whereby a patient’s family is requested to bring linen from home.

“The hospital environment does not encourage such practices in order to prevent infection control and cross-contamination,” says Mabona.

He says during a shortage of linen, hospitals communicate with neighbouring hospitals or district facilities to maintain an adequate supply of linen.

Mabona concludes by explaining the Department of Health continuously ensures that resources are allocated to government hospitals.
