Residents hope to resolve housing issue

Geluksdal - Residents are waiting to meet with the Gauteng MEC for Human Settlements, Jacob Mamabolo, in the hope that he will be able to resolve their housing issue.

It was reported in the African Reporter of April 10, ‘Geluksdal housing protest’, how residents were given eviction notices by the department, and took to the streets in protest.

It was alleged residents received eviction notices because some of them were illegally occupying RDP houses.

At the time, Tsakane police spokesman Capt Petros Mabuza explained that after police negotiated with the protesters, the group went to the Tsakane Customer Centre to hand over a memorandum.

Community leader Andile Sibanyoni says officials from the Ekurhuleni Office of the Speaker, and the Ekurhuleni Director of Human Settlements, Eddie Nkomose, reached an agreement on May 5 to meet with Mamabolo as soon as he is back in the country.

Sibanyoni adds they were promised the matter will be also handled by the Gauteng Petitions Committee so residents of Geluksdal can defend the petition they have drawn up.

The Ekurhuleni Metro had not responded at the time of going to print.
