Planting veggies for people in need
Tsakane - Green-thumbed Jerry Magomo (42) lives to plant vegetables and feed his family.
Originally from Limpopo, Magomo’s love for gardening started when he was eight years old and used to help his father, who was a farmer.
Magomo obtained a certificate in integrated farming from the Tompi Seleka Agriculture College in Limpopo.
He moved to Tsakane Extension Six 12 years ago, and has a beautiful garden on his property.
Magomo plants different vegetables, some of which he sells to make ends-meet, and others which he donates to disadvantaged families.
He enjoys planting vegetables as it ‘keeps him busy’.
“My love for agriculture is what encourages me to wake up in the morning and make a difference in the lives of others,” says Magomo.
When he arrived in Tsakane, he realised his gardening skills would not only ensure an income for him and his family, but it would also ensure that many people would not go to bed hungry.
Magoma says he lacks sufficient equipment which sometimes makes gardening a challenge.
“If I had enough equipment, I have no doubt I would make a big difference in the lives of others,” says Magomo.
He appeals to young people who complain about the high unemployment rate in the country to use their free time to do something that will benefit them, while also putting smiles on the faces of disadvantaged families.
