Young learners excel as Kwa-Thema book club partnership grows from strength to strength
A partnership between Discipline Masters Academy and Masifunde Sonke Book Club is helping Kwa-Thema learners develop discipline, leadership and strong reading skills.
Kwa-Thema – A successful partnership between Discipline Masters Academy and Masifunde Sonke Book Club is making a positive impact on the lives of young people in the community by promoting discipline, leadership, and a culture of reading.
One of the Masifunde Sonke Book Club’s founders, Nthabiseng Mochesane, told the African Reporter that Discipline Masters Academy was established on February 4 with the purpose of shaping and building better leaders for communities.
She added that its vision is to raise a generation of disciplined, responsible, and purpose-driven leaders who will contribute positively to society.
Mochesane shared that the book club focuses on promoting reading with understanding while encouraging learners to enjoy books, share ideas, and participate in book reviews.
Through this partnership, the book club’s founders, Mochesane, Vuyisile Goldsmith, and Thando Skakane, have combined their efforts to help children develop both discipline and literacy skills.
The programmes are hosted at Kenneth Masekela High School every Saturday at 09:00. The organisers expressed their gratitude to Principal Jiyane for allowing the use of the school’s facilities and to Nhlanhla Mnguni for providing financial support whenever possible.

“The partnership is already producing impressive results. Recently, learners attended a spelling bee audition hosted by the organisation Bacha Ba Dichaba at Tshepo Themba Resource Centre.
“Six participants from the programme took part in the competition, and two learners, Karabo Sibisi and Mbali Kubheka, successfully secured places among the top 26 spellers.
“They will now have the opportunity to represent Kwa-Thema in Lesotho at the National Spelling Bee Competition,” said Mochesane
Mochesane expressed that these achievements demonstrate the power of collaboration among community organisations and the importance of reading as a foundation for success.

The learners will participate in the Funda Mzantsi Championship 2026 in partnership with Ekurhuleni Libraries and the Department of Sport, Arts, Culture, Recreation and Education on June 27.
Participants will compete in various categories, including spelling bee, reading impromptu, debate, and book review. Mochesane shared that preparations are also underway for the Mathematics Olympiad on July 10.
She said that as part of the learners’ development programme, a hiking excursion is planned for June 20 to teach valuable life skills such as self-discipline, accountability, time management, and perseverance.
She indicated that the organisers believe that these are essential qualities that will help young people succeed not only in academics but throughout their lives.
“Through the combined efforts of Discipline Masters Academy and Masifunde Sonke Book Club, Kwa-Thema continues to nurture future leaders and lifelong learners,” said the co-founder.
