John Dube hit by service delivery protest

Duduza - John Dube residents took to the streets last Friday morning to protest against poor service delivery in their community.

Residents have complained their RDP homes are falling apart, that there are no street lights along the main roads and say the crime rate in John Dube is at an all time high.

They also claim the ward councillor, Tiny Mabena, never visits the area to listen to their grievances.

According to resident Portia Mabote (23), Mabena never comes to check what is going in the community, and whenever they go and lodge complaints, nothing is done to address those problems.

“We are tired of being taken for granted by the people who lead us, we also want to be heard and be taken seriously,” says Mabote.

Residents says they want supermarkets and schools in the area because they spend a lot of money on transport to supermarkets and their children have to walk long distances to school.

Khanyisile Mabaso (32) says a number of girls have been raped while walking to school.

“Our children are not safe walking long distances and passing through open fields, we can’t afford to pay for transport for them because most of us are unemployed,” says Mabaso.

She adds they were promised buses that would transport their children to and from school, but this never happened.

Capt Johannes Ramphora of the Springs Police Station says the protest is illegal because the necessary documents were not applied for.

The SAPS monitored the situation.

Mabena declined to comment.
