Skills offered to the youth
Tsakane - Matshidiso Silinda (42) shows her love for children by teaching them life skills every Saturday at her home in Extension 12.
She started offering life skills education to children from the age of five to 22 earlier this year when she came to realisation that many children have fallen victim to substance abuse because they had too much free time, and she wanted to change that.
Silinda explains she has always been passionate about children and with an increase in so many negative activities taking place, she wanted to instill life skills to young boys and girls in her community.
“I couldn’t sit around and watch children doing nothing over the weekend so I tasked myself to keep them busy by teaching life skills that they may apply in their lives,” says Silinda.
The most important skills she instils in her students is respect, discipline and hard work because she believes with these three qualities a person can go far in life.
One of the students, Zamokuhle Mkwanazi (15), says he has learnt a lot about self discipline since he started spending his Saturday afternoons at Silinda’s home.
“I enjoy spending my time productively,” says Mkwanazi.
