Student chefs get a taste of cooking competition

The 2015 Top Chef Culinary Competition for universities and colleges was held at the University of Technology in Vanderbjlpark last week.

The competition was hosted by the Department of Hospitality, Tourism and University of Technology, in conjunction with hotels and lodges in the Vanderbijlpark area..

Students from colleges and universities all over the country entered this two-day competition.

Boitumelo Phangane and Tsholofelo Nakedi, both Ekurhuleni East College (EEC) for Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) College hospitality students, received Top Chef awards.

Boitumelo received second place and Tsholofelo was in the top 10.

The two students were welcomed back by EEC management on Monday where they were spoiled to a breakfast at the Gable Inn campus restaurant.

Violet Matjila, EEC campus manager, says it is the first time the college entered the competition.

The aim of this competition is to build lasting relationships between other universities, colleges and the hospitality and tourism industry.

“It is to expose all the chef students to the exciting world of competition,” says Violet.

During the competition students are provided with a mystery basket of vegetables and spices, similar to the MasterChef programmes.

They are then expected to create a three course meal out of the basket’s contents.

Violet says the two students were mentored by EEC lecturers Rudo Mazhinye and Monique Sibande.
