The importance of having a will

KwaThema - Senior citizens at the KwaThema Old Age centre were educated about the importance of having a will.

A local law firm visited the centre on Monday to offer the centre’s residents the opportunity to draw up wills and testaments free of charge as part of their annual law society pro bono work.

Moeketsi Maema (43), an attorney from the firm, explained to residents about the importance of having a will so any family feuds over assets and properties are avoided.

“Many senior citizens in the community don’t have wills and when they die, members of the family are faced with the problems of who inherits property and assets, so we want to educate them about the necessity of having a will,” says Maema.

He adds that it is a challenge for senior citizens to go and draw up wills because sometimes family members mislead them or they may not know where to go or with whom to speak about such issues.

This was the first time the law firm visited the centre and they will continue to host such programmes annually for senior citizens.

Centre manager Monica Kgoloane says it is good that the law firm came to educate the senior citizens because many families are torn apart because of inheritance problems.
