Police warn residents – Suspects prey on victims before striking

Tsakane - Local police are urging residents to be more cautious and to beef up on security measures concerning their motor vehicles.

This is due to the increase in reported hijacking cases in the area.

According to Tsakane police spokesman, Capt Petros Mabuza, from May 7 to 10 a total of seven cases of car hijackings were reported at the station and most of these crimes occurred during the weekend between the hours of 8pm and 4am.

“We believe that the suspected criminals wait for their victims and prey on them when they leave or are entering their premises.

“In one incident a 30-year-old male was hijacked and shot dead at Tsakane Extension Eight, on Saturday at about 1.20am.

“His red VW golf was then taken and has not been recovered,” he says.

Mabuza advises drivers to ask someone to open or close the garage and gate of their homes for them. The police are pleading with drivers and other community members to look out for any suspicious persons on their streets and to then phone the police. If you suspect you could fall victim to a possible hijacking, drive to the nearest safe place such as a police station or a petrol station.

“Ensure that you don’t drive alone at night, install a tracking device in your car, when you are being hijacked remain calm and don’t try to fight the hijacker.

“Make sure that you do as you are told for your own life’s sake and always remember that a car can be recovered but if you fight, you may lose your life,” he emphasises.

Mabuza adds that police visibility is being increased in the area and encourages residents to continue working with them in the fight against crime in the area.
