Meet Afro Twist Ensemble
KwaThema – Afro Twist Ensemble is providing locals with a unique theatrical experience by bringing an explosion of melody and performances closer to the township.
The group, formed in March last year by local director Mpupile Mathibe (37), focuses on traditional, Christian and struggle songs.
“I wanted to create an energetic arts group with artistic brilliance and I am glad this is happening.
“The ensemble currently has 18 members from 18 to 30 years old and we have been very fortunate, to have the support of councillors from our local government including MMC Dorah Mlambo, which has awarded us many opportunities to perform in a broader space,” Mathibe says.
Some of the group’s highlights thus far include performing at the KwaThema Customer Care Centre events, in Springs, the newly opened KwaThema Fire Station, the OR Tambo Memorial where they were invited by mayor Clr Mondli Gungubele as well as performing at various universities around the country.
“Usually it is rare finding a theatre group that sings and acts all in one in our area, so this is what makes us stand out from other local groups.
“This then also makes it a challenge, as we find as artists, Ekurhuleni is not exposed much to theatre which sometimes limits us,” he adds.
Mathibe says another challenge is that because there is no regular pay when you do this locally, some people end up giving up on arts to find permanent jobs, but some of them continue regardless.
“We invite more young people to join us so performance art can grow around our city.
“We need people who are dedicated, energetic and who will do this for the love of art,” he says.
The group practises at 32 Nkopane Street in White City on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 3pm to 5pm.
