Locals show care for their own

Duduza - In the spirit of giving back to the community, members of the Millennium Burial Society (MBS) recently surprised Gogo Emily Mlangeni (87) with a gift she'll never forget.

The group refurbished the old woman’s house, giving it a much-need facelift and security upgrade.

“As MBS we asked for the community to help us identify an old person whom we could help.

“One of our conditions, however, was that this person should be someone who is not related to any of us.

“This was just so we could give back,” says disciplinary chairman of MBS, Karabo Segokodi.

After identifying Mlangeni, the group began renovating the house by filling cracked walls, fixing the toilet, and erecting a fence and a gate.

They also painted the house, doors and roof, fixed windows and replaced door handles, and a new stoep was erected.

When all the work was done for the day the group held a braai to celebrate with Mlangeni, and handed her groceries.

Segokodi adds that MBS has also adopted the senior citizen and will pay for funeral cover for her, which will help her family.

Mlangeni was overcome with emotion, saying she didn’t expect strangers to do something like this for her.

“I am so happy and thankful to these people as I did not expect anything like it.

“Even if God were to take me now, I would die happy.

“May these men not stop here, but do it for others as well. God bless them,” she says.

MBS thanks its sponsor from Nigel who donated the paints and painting material for this project.
