Extra maths classes yield results
KwaThema - Mathematics intervention has been helping learners improve their grades at Mathematics Excellency Academy at Langaville Secondary School for the past six years.
The academy was founded by Collen Msibi (26) for learners in Grades Eight to 10.
Collen says he founded the academy after he realised that many learners didn’t have an interest in taking pure maths in school.

“Some of their reasons were that they find the subject boring and difficult to tackle.
“They were not motivated to challenge the subject because they believed they can still make it without it.
“I didn’t understand this, because I used to enjoy the subject in school,” he says.
Collen says he decided to offer lessons to some of the Grade 12 learners in his residential block.
The group started attracting more learners.
“I decided to open an academy offering extra pure maths classes on Saturdays.”
Collen says he is happy his and the learners’ hard work is finally paying off.
“We received a 100% pass in the first term. This is an improvement over the previous years.
“This shows that the learners are dedicated to the programme and eager to learn more,” he says.

Collen is encouraging parents in Kwatsaduza to enrol their children in the programme.
“Some of the learners with very poor results enrol in the programme and come out as top performers.
“We help change their attitude towards the subject. We also offer motivational career campaigns where people from different fields get to share their experiences,” he says.
