Centenarians honoured by church

KwaThema - The St Matthew's Methodist (Central) congregation celebrated the lives of two centenarians last Sunday.

Two centenarians, Violet Molefe (100) and Dustan Chiya (103) have lived longer than most people even dream they can.

Worldwide, the average life expectancy between 2010 and 2013 was 68 years and six months for males and 73 years and six months for females, according to United Nations World Population Prospects 2012.

“It is remarkable, and that is why we organised the celebration.

“This doesn’t happen often.

“How many of us know people who are that old?” says Nombulelo Mvimbi, who helped organise the event.

Mvimbi adds that the celebrants were all smiles, throughout the event.

“I really believe that we made them happy.

“We made their year.”

Thandi Njoli, a circuit steward for the church, says they had planned to have a small gathering but it attracted more people than expected.

“We wanted to buy them birthday cakes and make them feel important. Amadodana (men’s’ choir) caught wind of it and decided to contribute and also perform on the day,” Njoli said.

The day was filled with joyous music, food and laughter.
