Father pleads for help to rebuild his family home

Jabu Mzana (54) is asking the community to help him rebuild the house his family lost in a fire 2 years ago.

KwaThema – Jabu Mzana (54) is asking for the community’s help to create a safer environment for his daughters.

Zanele (25) and Dansile Mzana (29) share a room made out of palisade fencing in the yard where the shell of their grandparents’ house stands.

“There was a fire in 2015,” Dansile explains.

“Everything in the house was destroyed, including the electrics.”

Fortunately, there was no one inside the house when the blaze took over the structure.

“We suspect it was arson because they found petrol traces leading to the back of the house and into the veld,” explains Jabu, who has been unemployed for years.

The family says they have received no feedback from the police on the investigation since the fire.

“There was some structural damage to our neighbour’s house also and she actually had to be treated for smoke inhalation,” Jabu says.

Soon after the incident, Jabu approached the Customer Care Centre and his ward councillor for assistance, but this did not yield any tangible results.

“This house has been standing in ruins for the past two years,” he says.

“And because the house has no doors or windows vandals have been using it to smoke nyaope, which poses a greater risk to my daughters.

“I am appealing to the community to help us rebuild this house for my children’s sake as I cannot rest until there is a proper roof over their heads,” Jabu pleads.
