Mvuselelo (9) masters clarinet and saxophone, puts his primary school on the map

KwaThema – Mvuselelo Zwane (9) is using his sweet melodies to put Khangezile Primary School on the map.

“He started playing the recorder in Grade One and advanced to the melodica the next year,” explains Themba Vamba, a teacher at the school.

Mvuselelo went on to master the clarinet and saxophone by the time he had finished Grade Three.

The school competed in the Segarona District competition early last month at the Springs Town Hall.

“We participated in the solo instrumental category and Mvuselelo won first place.

He will be representing the district, Gauteng East, at the provincial competition in October,” he explains.

Vamba says that Mduduzi Mtshali, Mvuselelo’s instructor has done a great job in identifying and nurturing his talent.

“They work hard after school and on Saturdays.

And their hard work is paying off.”

Mvuselelo’s father, Phumlani, says his son has a big dream.

“It is all he talks about. He wants to achieve great things through his music.

He says he will be on television soon,” he adds.

Gogo Anna, his grandmother, believes the school has been very instrumental in honing her grandchild’s talent.

“We do not have the means to buy him the instrument ourselves, so I am very grateful.”

She believes playing the saxophone also keeps Mvuselelo off the street.

“Because he is so preoccupied with practising and doing well in competitions, he never has time to roam the streets and be naughty.”
