Personal weight struggle pushes Nosipho to help others
Nosipho Msiza is using her personal victories in her weight loss journey to motivate the community to educate themselves about health and wellness.
Tsakane – Nosipho Msiza (29), with the assistance of Pholosong Hospital, is hosting a wellness day to encourage the community to take better care of their health.
“There are many small changes that people can make to improve their health, but they are not aware of these.”
Nosipho was 113kg at her heaviest and her life changed once she educated herself and made the right food choices.
“Simple things like fizzy drinks seem harmless, but do you know how much sugar is in that thing?”
Her aim is to provide the community with the knowledge so that they can make informed decisions.
“I also involved Pholosong because I want to raise awareness about mental illness in the black community.
We are so quick to say ‘unedlozi’ (ancestral calling) or ‘bayahlanya’ (they are crazy).”
She believes that people would be more accepting of people with mental illness if they knew exactly what it is and how it can be treated.
“We are creating a vegetable garden at Pholosong which I believe will serve to rehabilitate mentally ill patients in the hospital.
Nosipho says she used to have a productive vegetable garden in one of the schools, but it was burned by vandals.
The event will take place at Mponeng Park, Tsakane on September 23.
Registration for the 8km run and 5km walk will start at 6.30am.
“We have plenty of activities for children through the day.”
Thabsile Mkhwanazi, communication manager at Pholosong Hospital, confirms that they will provide a few testing and consultation stations at the event.
