A Look at the Game
So, how did the game turn out unexpectedly?
Five minutes before the end of the game Thembi Kgatlana made an impressive strike. This shocked their counterparts since many had anticipated that the match would end in a draw.
This was a much-needed win for the South Africans. It has boosted their confidence for the next matches.
Although the Nigerians were disappointed by the results they did make an effort to score. During the second half Desire Oparanozie had almost come close to scoring for the Nigerians. However, it wasn’t their lucky day, as the team suffered their second defeat against the South Africans in more than twenty years.
That same day saw Zambia thrush Equatorial Guinea five goals to nothing. Shepololo had scored two goals before halftime from France Banda and Ireen Lungu. During the second half, three more goals were netted with two goals from Racheal Kundanaji and another one from Mary Mwakipala.
Currently, Equatorial Guinea has lost 12 goals in two games. On Wednesday, 21 November, Banyana Banyana beat the former winners 7-1. But Equatorial Guinea is still hopeful they can make it to the semi-finals.
However, this will be only possible if they can beat the defending champions this coming Saturday. And Banyana Banyana to defeat the Zambians.
Who Has the Odds?
To be honest, it does seem that there are a few strong contendors out there. Nigeria has proven to have a strong team. Thus Equatorial Guinea will have a hard task ahead of them. Since their loss to South Africa, Nigeria has had a lot of pressure to regain their lost glory.
It seems luck was on their side after they managed to beat unrelenting Zambia. They started off on a fast pace during the first half thus failed to score. However, in the second half, they garnered three goals from Francisca Ordega, Rasheedat Ajibade and Amarachi Okoronkwo.
All these four teams are in the race to become the top three in the tournament. Those three teams will clinch spots at the World Cup in France next year.
However, Equatorial Guinea cannot be placed in the World Cup following a FIFA ban. This is as a result of them using ineligible players in the 2016 Rio Olympics. But it is good to credit them for having been crowned the African Champions twice.
