Programme to increase the love of maths in schools

“We are going to have maths centres for Grade Nine learners in Daveyton, Duduza, Tsakane and KwaThema,” he says.

Kwatsaduza – Maths 2022 has set a target to develop 5 000 learners from the local school by 2022.

The initiative was formed by Ntsane Masiloane as a School Enrichment Programmes four years ago.

Ntsane says he decided to start the programme to assist township schools. The programme started in 2011 in partnership with the Gauteng Department of education and the office of the chief whip of ANC.

“The programme aims at developing 5 000 Grade Nine learners of KwaThema, Tsakane, Duduza and Daveyton, for matric in 2022.

“We have recognised that the availability of strong maths interventions in the lower grades is limited within many of our townships, leaving our youth with poor grades in maths.

“This prevents them registering for some career paths that require pure math as a passed subject.”

Ntsane says last year, in Kwa Thema alone, there was a total of 1 200 learners in Grade 12 – 300 of which were doing maths and 900 maths literacy.

“Duduza had a total of 750 Grade 12 learners, 185 learners were doing maths and 565 maths literacy. “Tsakane had a total of 1 160 Grade 12 learners, 330 did maths and 830 maths literacy,” he adds.

The maths tutor added that instead of complaining about a fraction percentage of learners doing mathematics in Grade 10 to 12, they were committed to doing something about the problem.

“We strongly believe that we can increase the numbers from a total of about 1 100 maths Grade12 learners in these communities to a minimum of 4 000 in 2022.
