Community warned to steer clear of Duduza Mega City construction site

KwaThema – Constructors from Temi Projects are concerned about the safety of residents using the Mega City construction site in Duduza as a thoroughfare.
Even more concerning is that young children are using the open trenches for swimming.
Safety officer on the site Sabatha Masilo says they started working in June and part of the first phase of construction was to dig trenches.

“The open trenches are now posing a safety risk for the residents, especially the children.
“We have tried putting up barricade nets, but they get stolen overnight.
“Unfortunately, this poses a danger to the residents using the area as a thoroughfare because they might fall into one of the open trenches.
“On a daily basis in the afternoon we have to guard the trenches because a group of boys swims in the dirty rainwater.
“We have tried to drain out the water daily, but because it is a rainy season, every morning they are filled up again,” he explains.
Masilo says they are urging residents to work with them in discouraging the children from playing or swimming in the trenches.

“We don’t want to end up with a situation with a child losing their life because of this,” he adds.
Duduza police spokesperson Sgt Harry Manaka urged residents to respect the signs at the construction site and keep away from it.
“They should also ensure that their livestock grazes away from the site.
“We are also urging them not to steal the danger barricade nets because they are put up for a reason,” he adds.
