Streets, speed humps and drains on residents’ list of demands

Tsakane –Lack of service delivery and development has angered the residents of Extension 11.

They state they have been in the area for more than 29 years without any proper development.

They are complaining about gravel streets, incomplete roads, the lack of speed humps and a shortage of storm drains.

Resident Nhlanhla Xaba told African Reporter that they had tried to discuss the matter with the ward councillor.

“She only came to address us once and were we told to draft a petition, which we did and gave her seven days to reply, but she still hasn’t gotten back to us.

“We need proper streets, humps and there must be more drains for water when it rains,” says Xaba.

Resident Solly Motebang explains that another problem is flooding.

“Because we do not have enough drains and our roads are not tarred, when it rains the water from the main road comes directly into our homes and damages our belongings.

“It gets so muddy that we have to wear plastic bags around our feet.

“If we want to go outside, the water pulls on the gravel surface and piles up.

“Our children have to miss school on the day because crossing the street is impossible.”

According to residents the councillor is prioritising the new establishment in the surrounding area.

“She has constructed two roads for the new establishment, which is not fair because we were one of the first people to be placed in this area.

“When these new Reconstruction and Development Programmes were established in the area, we were already here,” says angry resident Serame Madidimale.

He explains that the lack of speed humps in the area has led to many children getting hit by cars.

“Not so long ago another child was hit by a car. Luckily, the women took the child to the nearest hospital and he survived.”
