KwaThema – A new 120m street worth R1.2-million is under construction in Barcelona.
The work commenced in October and the road is expected to be handed over to the community at the end of the November.
Ward 80 Clr Wilson Busakwe says the metro decided to build the small street to reduce the traffic along Vlakfontein Road.

“We identified that during the weekend the road becomes congested because of the funerals and other road users, so to reduce the load we decided to build this street to channel some of the traffic into Raborifi Street.
“We also wanted to fight the amount of crime on this piece of land because criminals targeted residents using the open space as a thoroughfare.
“We have absorbed 10 unemployed residents and one local subcontractor who appointed four labourers.
“At this point the new street doesn’t have a name because it is built on a space that was previous an open space.
“It will only be named as soon as the metro releases the names which were proposed,” he explains.

Busakwe is urging residents not to disturb the project with protests.
“This is a small project that could only absorb a few unemployed residents.
“We will consider others when there are other opportunities in the ward,” he adds.
